District Dorsoduro

The Contarini apartment is located next to the fascinating Campo San Barnaba, in the Dorsoduro District, surrounded by picturesque canals and beautiful Palazzi.

Once upon a time a Squero (boat yard) it has been converted in a charming historic apartment characterized by a long and spacious living area (boat construction required large open space) fitted with fascinating antique furniture.

The tall ceiling with large skylights and the old wooden trusses enhances the uniqueness of this place. After the entrance room there is a full bathroom with bathtub and shower screen, the kitchen follows immediately before reaching the loft-style living room. The kitchen has been restored in 2021 therefore it is functional and fully equipped with contemporary electrical appliances, plus it opens on the dining area through an antique stones window, making it easy and convivial to cook for your guests.

Beside plenty of sofas and couches, the loft is equipped with a brand-new queen-size wall-bed that can be hidden behind a heavy curtain separating what we consider the second bedroom from the living room. When the second bed is not needed the same space can be used as a lovely canal view reading room: with some effort it is possible to open the private water door and choose a book from the large library available at the apartment, sitting right in front of the gondolas sliding along the canal savouring a good glass of wine, that's Venice!

You can access the master bedroom located at the first floor through a rather narrow wooden stairway. It measures about 30 square meters, features high wooden beamed ceiling, is particularly luminous and two of the four windows face the canal. There is also a small toilet room accessible through a short staircase.

Away from the "hustle and bustle" of Piazza San Marco, this is the perfect place to enjoy this beautiful city at its best. Being home to the renowned Venice Ca' Foscari University the general vibe of the area is creative, youthful and relaxed. The district heart is Campo Santa Margherita, only 2 minutes’ walk from the Contarini apartment: in the daytime you can find a nice open-air market, children playing, locals walking dogs, shops and cafes; in the evening you could treat yourself at one of the trendy or classical bars and restaurants that are open until around midnight.

Summarizing, the Contarini is a characteristic apartment, not particularly recommended for families with small children because of the fragility of its furniture. It is a rare find in its kind: top-located, full of history and charm, recommended for those who love experiencing the truly Venetian lifestyle.

Kelly, February 2025

We loved this apartment for our 10 day stay in Venice (Sept-Oct 2024). Would absolutely book through Truly Venice again. Antiques, original art, and books in several languages added to the charm of the apartment. It has an amazing skylight ceiling that looks through wooden beams, up to an old tower. Comfortable bed (we only used the upstairs one) and good water pressure and water heat in full bathroom. That really helped after a day of cold rain on our trip to Murano. There is a (very) small washing machine and a drying rack for clothes, which served our purposes fine. The kitchen was functional and well-stocked for cooking at home and includes a dishwasher and microwave. The couch isn't comfortable, but we sat mostly sat in comfy chairs pulled near our back "water" door looking straight on a small canal. Gondolas and everyday Venetians' boats sailed right past us! Walking pedestrians were not our our side of that canal, but were on the other, which helped with a sense of privacy. It was lovely just to sit and have a drink or snack and listen to water and the bells of Venice ringing through the air. There are also windows that look down at the canal in the upstairs bedroom. Campo San Barnaba is steps away, with restaurants and a gelato shop. We were very near to a bakery and also what I would call a "drug store" like CVS or Walgreens in America, with toothpaste, shampoo, toilet paper, etc. Note - get bug spray your first day in Venice if you can! The mosquitos were unavoidable when we were there (Sept/Oct). We weren't swarmed, but we were definitely bitten. The Conad grocery store is a five minute walk way from the apartment, on the way to Campo Santa Margarita. (Note, it has an elevator near the entrance, with meats and cheeses on the second floor!) Brings bags or be prepared to pay a few cents for each bag. There is a famous fruit and veggie boat moored at Campo Barnada as well, and a gondolier station. Our gondola ride with Marco from this station was a highlight of our trip. Don't be afraid to ask for more time; we had a ride for an hour for $190 plus tip that took us through cool back alleys (rios or water roads) we never would have seen otherwise - and also along the Grand Canal. We were also steps away (one minute walk) from the Ca'Rezzonico vaporetto (water bus) stop on the Grand Canal, which was wonderful. If you don't want to walk everywhere, buy a pass for several days for the vaporetto and just take it the nearest stop of your destination. I think Bus #1 stops at every stop along the Grand Canal; just pay attention to the direction it's going. The Accademia Bridge is one stop to the right (or East) and has amazing views from it, especially for sunrises and sunsets. Also, the staff at Truly Venice are amazing. They arranged our water taxis rides to and from the airport, which was well worth the $140 plus tip as a hello and goodbye to the city through the lagoon, small canals and Grand Canal. They met us at the vaporetto station near the apartment and took us there to give us keys, information, etc. They even left water in the frigde for us upon our arrival. You can't go wrong with them!!

September 2024, Rachael (USA)
