The city of Venice has introduced a new tourist tax for overnight stays in the city. The tax is applied per person per night (approx. €2), for a stay of maximum five consecutive nights (no tax will be paid from the 6th night onwards). The measure will not affect the residents of the Municipality of Venice.
The rates vary according to season (low season 50% reduction), location of the accommodation (full price in historic center of Venice, 30% reduction on the other islands of the lagoon, 40% reduction on the mainland) and by category and type of accommodation (to distinguish between hotels, and extralberghier, ie tourist resorts and campsites).
Children aged 10-16 years pay half price while the tax will not apply to children under the age of 10 years. Children will not be the only ones to enjoy the exemption, however: this will also cover those staying in youth hostels or other facilities owned by the municipality and all persons attending patients hospitalized in regional health facilities. Also exempt the drivers of buses, tourist escorts groups of at least 25 participants and volunteers, or members of the armed forces, who offer their service in the city for events or service needs.
Government passed the national law on "Regulations on the subject of municipal federalism", according to which local authorities are entitled to enforce tourist taxes and the revenue is to finance interventions of in the tourism sector, maintenance of cultural heritage sites and environment, and for improving public services.
